The biggest lesson I learned from my trip to the Dominican, is how excited and eager the people are to try and do new activities. I was able to see this take action while I was outside of the Brown Horse medical clinic. Outside there was evangelism, art, music, and dancing. Marylin, Mr. Rumple, and Angelo (who is also my Uncle), would evangelize to young adults and children. While watching that you were able to see who was engaged. Those are the people that at the end of the day would decide that they wanted to start or continue to walk in their faith with Jesus.
One group that I was able to see, was when Angelo was evangelizing to two young men. They both were very engaged and wanted to learn more about following Christ. These two men were so invested that they, with a little encouragement, were ready to spread the word to their community that minute. Within that short time gap: Uncle Angelo, my friend Alex, our interpreter Fransisco and I were walking around the block of this Dominican community with the young men. We had one stop that was very special to each of us.
Angelo saw four construction workers. He has stopped and began to evangelize to them. He asked if any of them were Christian, one man said, “yes, I am.” However all of his coworkers said no he isn't, he is lying. So we asked him if his actions always represent the Lord, and like all of us would say he said “no”. We told him that was okay and that none of us always act in a way that represents the Lord. We told him that it is okay because we all sin and we can never be perfect – no human is or ever will be. But what we can do is put our faith in Jesus and ask for his forgiveness and receive salvation in that. After we told him this, we re-told him that even though he may have fallen away from the Lord he has not lost his salvation, because once you gain salvation it is never able to leave you. Salvation is just like the Lord’s love; it is always with you once you accept it. After explaining all of this we asked if we were able to pray with them. They allowed us to, so we prayed over all of them that they may be drawn near to the Lord again and not fall away.
This afternoon was very different and memorable, because while we were on our trip we ran a mobile medical clinic. I was tasked with being in the pharmacy, so being able to go outside and see how others were interacting with the locals and our group was very eye opening and intriguing.
